《Auspicious wood makes Buddha statues》

Buddhism has been introduced into China from ancient India with a long history and a history of thousands of years. The development and popularization of Buddhism in China mainly depends on the enlightenment and dissemination of Buddhist statues, so there is a saying that Buddhism is like Buddhism.

Buddhism is closely related to trees and has an indissoluble bond. It is said that Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, was born under a carefree flower tree in the garden. Later, he became a Buddha under the bodhi tree and finally passed away under two Saha trees. Several critical moments of his life were connected with the trees, and he spent a lot of time lecturing and teaching for his disciples under the Aesculus tree. Since the Song Dynasty, Chinese Buddhist statues have been carved from wood, with more sophisticated techniques and rich and colorful forms of expression. According to ancient legends, folk artists have created a large number of treasures of Buddha statues that have been handed down for centuries.

Hengshan Mountain, Nanyue in Hunan Province, is one of the five mountains. There are 72 peaks, stretching for hundreds of miles. Mount Hengshan is a Buddhist holy land in southern China. There are many famous ancient temples, such as Nanyue temple, Zhusheng temple, Fuyan temple, Fangguang temple, sutra hall, and Buddha statues can be seen everywhere.

In the East Street of Nanyue Town, there are many carving craftsmen of Buddha statues. They inherit the skills of their ancestors and produce a large number of exquisite wooden Buddhas every year. The trees transported from the deep mountains and forests have been carefully processed by the craftsmen into a new Buddha statue. The solemn Shakyamuni, the smiling God of wealth, the simple and wise arhat, the mighty king of heaven, the graceful flying sky, and the soothing Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva......

The wood Buddha uses sandalwood, camphor, pine and cypress and other trees, which are dried and customized according to the specific requirements of the buyer. Each Buddha statue is made by more than ten rough and fine carving, polishing, painting and gold pasting. The trees that had lost their vitality were reborn in the hands of skilled craftsmen and had an afterlife, becoming the gods worshipped by believers all year round.

In the spring of 2004, I began to pay attention to the wooden Buddha and shoot the figure of the Buddha. It records the process of trees constantly regenerating in the hands of craftsmen and turning into statues of Buddha. From forest to log, from carving to gold, from opening light sacrifice to Buddha body. Trees record the growth process with clear rings, inherit the history of the world worshiping heroes with the majestic posture of Buddha statues, and convey touching stories with eternal legends, so that lost, lonely and regretful hearts can be comforted and reposed. In the temple, Buddha statues have long accepted the vigorous incense and worship of all sentient beings in the world, and have become the spiritual support and the other side of life of believers. The transformation of trees into Buddhas is caused by people and faith. Jimu becomes a Buddha, and the Buddha is on earth. After 2005, I visited more than 60 ancient temples and famous temples in Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Shanxi, Beijing and other places, went deep into more than 50 Buddhist statue production workshops, interviewed more than 50 mages and carving craftsmen, experienced 10 large-scale Buddhist statue opening ceremonies, went deep into the Buddhist world, and recorded the reincarnation process of Buddhist statues for many times.

In the winter of 2007, four years after shooting "Auspicious wood makes Buddha statues", i once again expanded my thinking, broadened my horizons, excavated image works with thoughts, connotations and implications in every trip and daily life, and integrated the development and changes of contemporary Chinese folk spiritual beliefs and reflection into them. With "Buddha" as the clue, let "Buddha" appear, grow, reincarnate, change and develop in the lens, and then present a rich and colorful Buddhist world, as well as more visible and intriguing stories of Buddha's past and present lives.

People crowded on the front terrace of the temple, opening their hands to welcome the "Buddha light".
